This watch dates to circa 1974 as evidenced by the luminous circle around the face and the orange hand denoting am, or pm; a combination available for one year only. It’s official name is the Explorer II model 1655, but is popularly known as the “Steve McQueen Rolex”. Though it was not a movie that made this model famous; this was the watch Steve McQueen wore in real life. The watch he wore in the film,  Le Mans was most likely a Tag Heuer Monaco. The year after this model was made, Rolex changed the color of the extra hour hand to red. Rolex enjoyed the popularity of the Steve McQueen Rolex for many years. However in 1985, Rolex discontinued the Explorer II model 1655, the Steve McQueen Rolex; one of the most popular models in the company’s history.
